Why Are Yellow Lights Used in Embryo Culture Rooms?

Light can have both direct and indirect effects on embryos. Direct exposure to light may damage the embryo's DNA or cellular structures, while indirect effects may occur when light causes the culture media especially the oil overlaying the media to undergo oxidation, altering its properties and potentially compromising embryo development. For this reason, embryo culture media are typically stored in dark conditions to minimize the risk of light-induced damage.
Embryos cultured outside the human body, in a laboratory environment, must be kept under conditions that closely mimic those within the body. This ensures optimal development and helps protect the embryos from environmental stress, promoting healthy and safe growth.
The most harmful types of light for embryos are ultraviolet (UV) light, as well as blue and violet light, all of which are present in standard white light commonly emitted by regular fluorescent bulbs. These wavelengths can induce stress in embryos and negatively impact their development. To minimize these risks, embryology laboratories should avoid using fluorescent lighting. Instead, yellow light with a wavelength of approximately 580 nanometers is recommended. Yellow light is considered embryo safe as it does not damage embryonic DNA, reduces chromosomal abnormalities, and minimizes the production of free radicals that could interfere with embryo development.
At N.I.C IVF Clinic, we recognize the significant impact that light can have on embryo development. Our embryo culture laboratory is equipped with yellow lighting systems that operate within a wavelength range proven to be safe for embryo cultivation. Additionally, we minimize light exposure during procedures to closely mimic the natural environment of the uterus. This careful control of light conditions helps ensure that every embryo is nurtured in the safest and most optimal setting. We are committed to providing the highest level of care throughout every step of the treatment journey—giving couples full confidence that their embryos are in expert hands.
