PGT-A vs PGT-M: What’s the Difference?
What is PGT-A?
PGT-A (Preimplantation Genetic Testing for Aneuploidies) is a genetic screening test used to evaluate chromosomal abnormalities in embryos. After the ICSI procedure and once the embryo reaches the blastocyst stage, a small biopsy of 5–10 cells are taken and analyzed before embryo transfer into the uterus.
Benefits of PGT-A:
- Selects embryos with normal chromosomal composition
- Reduces the risk of miscarriage
- Decrease the number of IVF/ICSI cycles needed
- Screens for chromosomal abnormalities such as Down syndrome
Who should consider PGT-A?
- Women aged 35 and above
- Patients with a history of recurrent miscarriage (2 or more times)
- Couples with multiple unsuccessful IVF/ICSI attempts
What is PGT-M?
PGT-M (Preimplantation Genetic Testing for Monogenic Disorders) is a diagnostic test used to detect specific genetic diseases caused by mutations in a single gene (single-gene disorders) within embryos.
Before undergoing PGT-M, embryos are typically screened with PGT-A to ensure normal chromosomal status. Only then will they proceed to PGT-M testing.
Benefits of PGT-M:
- Reduces the risk of passing on inherited genetic diseases
- Prevents single-gene disorders before pregnancy begins
Who should consider PGT-M?
- Couples with a family history of genetic disorders
- Couples who are known carriers of genetic conditions
- Couples who have previously had a child with a genetic disease

Should You Choose PGT-A or PGT-M?
The choice between PGT-A and PGT-M depends on several factors, including:
- Age
- Medical and fertility history
- Previous treatment outcomes
- Family history of genetic conditions
Ultimately, the decision should be guided by a fertility specialist who can tailor the treatment plan to your specific needs.
