How do we know good quality sperm?

Semen is a thick white liquid composed of sperm and fluid. Each ejaculation contains about 3-4 milliliters and contains an average of 300-500 million sperm.

If you want to know what the quality of your semen is. Must perform semen quality analysis. which can know both the concentration motion Currently, assisted reproductive technology has been developed by using a computer system (Computer Assisted Sperm Analysis: CASA) which helps in analyzing the quality of semen to be more accurate.

When should we test semen?

  1. People who want to plan to have children
  2. People with congenital diseases that adversely affect semen quality.

Good semen quality what must it be like?

The World Health Organization (WHO, 2021) has set the criteria for semen quality analysis as follows:

  1. The volume of semen must be greater than or equal to 1.4 ml (≥ 1.4 ml.)
  2. The concentration of sperm must be greater than or equal to 16 million per milliliter (≥16 x 106/ml.)
  3. The total number of sperm must be greater than or equal to 39 million per ejaculation (≥ 39 x 106/ejaculate)
  4. The motility of sperm must be greater than or equal to 42 percent (≥ 42%)
  5. The number of sperm with normal shape must be greater than or equal to 4 percent (≥ 4%)

What should you do before collecting sperm?

  1. Abstain from sexual intercourse, including ejaculation, for at least 2-3 days, but not more than 7 days, before testing the semen quality. If the interval is longer than 7 days, the interpretation of the semen quality found will be inaccurate.
  2. Wash your hands thoroughly before collecting sperm.
  3. It is not recommended to collect sperm using condoms or lubricants because condoms and lubricants contain lubricants that can destroy sperm.
  4. Collecting semen by masturbation is the best way to collect semen. Collect it in a special container provided by the hospital.
  5. After collecting semen, send it to the laboratory immediately.

The laboratory takes about 2 hours to analyze the semen. If the semen results indicate a need for a repeat test, the treating physician may recommend a test interval of at least 3 months. Since the sperm production process takes approximately 3 months per cycle, if you have any further questions, it is recommended that you consult a specialist to plan your treatment.
